The D819 Hr.Ms. Amsterdam was built by the Dutch Dock and Shipbuilding Company. On March 26, 1953, the keel was laid and left on August 25, 1956, the ship into the water. Tasks of the destroyers

The main tasks of the submarine hunters were: the protection of their own fleets and merchant shipping against enemy submarines, detecting and destroying enemy submarines and protect their own fleets and merchant vessels against light above water. HNLMS Amsterdam to New Guinea

The first major mission of the HNLMS Amsterdam was to Dutch New Guinea. Under the command of Captain-lieutenant JGA Siliacus the ship sailed October 8, 1959, under the cheerful sounds of Sailors Chapel Willemsoord from Den Helder. The route ran through ports such as Gibraltar-Palermo-Byrouth-Port Said-Colombo Frementle Perth-Port Darwin. The destroyer arrived on November 29 to Biak.
