NS: buy a train ticket online

After tickets, museum tickets and gift certificates you can now also your train ticket online. In mid-March 2009 started the NS with the trial and it was, not unexpectedly, a success. The web shop for train tickets is open on ns.nl, but you can not purchase all types of tickets. Please note that an e-ticket printed should be good, because an unreadable bar code, the gates will not open.

What tickets?

It was already possible to order online special tickets such as the Wonder card and the Spring, Summer and Autumn Tour. With the expansion, it is also possible to purchase standard tickets: single ticket, day return, and Railrunner day pass. The NS has recently also started another action to boost online sales: Same Nuit Discount. This group discount for people traveling on the same route. A person pays the full fee and up to three others can then buy a ticket at a discount. This is only available through the website and you should also order tickets via the option NS Same Nuit Discount. Note: Same discount Nuit goes on weekdays until after 9:00.

How does it work?

  • Give the date of travel, itinerary, map type, class and any discount.
  • Enter the full name, date of birth and number of identity document. This can be a passport, driving license or identity card.
  • Indicate how many tickets you want and fill in the details of any travel companions in.
  • Enter the email address to which the e-ticket can be sent. The NS warns that are difficult to access behind the firewall addresses.
  • Pay for the card with iDeal ABN Amro, Rabobank, SNS, Fortis and ING.
  • The e-ticket will be created immediately after the payment.
  • Print out the ticket on A4 paper in portrait position. A4 e-tickets are valid and the ticket must be legible. Color or black and white does not matter as long as the ticket is legible.

  • For printing is minimal Adobe Acrobat version 3.0.

    Travelling with an e-ticket

    Because the e-ticket is in the name, the traveler must be able to demonstrate his or her valid identity document in addition to the e-ticket. The online tickets are not transferable. The date on the ticket and the date of travel must necessarily be the same. Buy tickets without a date is not available online.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Although buy a ticket home is convenient, there are both advantages and disadvantages.
    Advantages
    • You do not have to make time to buy a ticket for departure on the station.
    • You are assured of a valid ticket, because you have no more trouble with machine jams or long lines.

    Drawbacks
    • You always have your ID and print carry with you.
    • Not all tickets are for sale online.
    • IDeal payment takes time and processing the payment lasts fifteen minutes. Time saving with respect to the card vending machine is minimal.
    • The option is not open to foreign visitors because of payment only iDeal is possible with a Dutch bank account.

    Issues

    Identity
    If traveling with an e-ticket, but no identification with you, you get a fine.
    Discount card
    If traveling with an e-ticket at a discount, but do not discount card with you, you get a fine. Possibly you can make the fine forgiving if you call 0900-2021163.
    E-ticket
    If traveling with an e-ticket, but the print forget, you get a fine. You may be able to cancel the fine if you call 0900-2021163. Cancel the order only before payment; if you have paid, you can not cancel. With double order you can only get your money back if the data are exactly the same: name, date of travel, route, class and type of card. Call this with the above number. E-tickets can not be exchanged for cash.
    Data
    If there is an error in the data, then the ticket is not valid. This is true first name, ID number, route, date, class and discount. If you have already paid, you can get back any money because you are supposed to monitor all accounts for payment. Travelling with an e-ticket with false information can result in a fine.
    If you have opted for second class while the first class should be, then you can buy a Transition Proof 2-1 at the counter.
    Discount forgotten
    If you have already paid, you can not do anything.

    Conditions

    For e-tickets are the same conditions as other tickets except that they can not be returned. This makes sense because the e-tickets in the name, but not the standard tickets. Get money back in case of delay is possible. There are, however, some additional conditions:
    • The e-ticket must be printed out and should not be displayed electronically.
    • Illegible or incomplete printed tickets will be rejected.
    • The NS is not liable if there are problems in equipment, with the email address or in case of technical failures in the payment.

    I live in Lanaken, the Belgian side of Maastricht. I regularly go to Schiphol, but a train ticket online to track the Maastricht to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, is impossible because I'm at a Belgian bank. Also, Visa and other credit cards can not be used. Incomprehensible in 2013!

    I have never experienced such a crappy site. It's easier to drive 10km to railway station than online to book a trip, nor national, nor internationaal.Of the program stops responding or crashes. It is sometimes unclear what to do to keep going or you can give okay to pay, if the price does not appear, or when paying the program runs again firmly. Really hopeless, hopeless!

    All very easy and fast until you come to pay. You can all pay through a Dutch bank. My bank is in England and I have credit cards but can not pay. So I can not buy a ticket over the Internet. I can go to the poorest place in the world go around and everywhere you can pay via Visa or Master until I arrive in the Netherlands. Not a problem normally but if you do not even have a ticket can purchase over the Internet abroad I think that's pretty bad!

    They can see at the NS, or e-ticket is printed. So they know that the ticket has not been printed and also the travel date is expired. Get comfortable with the NS to hide behind the "conditions" to avoid paying so nothing back.

    When we loaded the e-ticket is not complete. It was Saturday, and the 0900 number of failures was not available. Note with printout of download failure and otherwise call the 0900 number.     I read that eTickets are cheaper than at the counter, but I see the price difference does not: an e-ticket from wijchen to oath-wganeingen costs 14.30, the same as at the counter.

    The e-ticket is a valid ticket for the date written on it. You can not buy regular tickets or e-tickets at a discount, so the regular restrictions it not toepassing.Jantrao

Very easy of course and not particularly friendly, but everyone can imagine how there could be an abuse if the NS is more tolerant drafted.
